Decks

A deck is one of the few things you can add to a house that gets used almost every day through summer. We build them across Hamilton and the wider Waikato, on flat sections and on the awkward sloping ones other builders talk you out of.

The Part You Walk On Is the Easy Part

Two decks can look identical on day one and be twenty years apart in how long they last. The difference is all underneath. It comes down to the post treatment and how deep the footings go, mostly, with joist spacing close behind. None of it is visible once the boards go down.

Low Platform Decks.

These sit just off the ground. Simplest build of the lot and the cheapest per square metre, and usually the right answer for a flat back yard.

Raised Decks & Balustrades.

More structure underneath, and once you are over a metre up, a balustrade with gaps small enough to be safe and a rail that will take someone's weight leaning on it.

Multi-Level Decks.

Built in stages down a slope so the deck follows the land. Costs more because the substructure grows with every metre you drop, and it turns a bank nobody walks on into somewhere you can sit.

Deck Rebuilds & Repairs.

Bouncy boards, rotten posts, or a deck that has started pulling away from the house. We will tell you honestly whether the frame is worth saving.

Process

How We Handle It

Timber grade is where cheap deck quotes hide. Posts going into the ground need H5 treatment, bearers and joists want H3.2 at minimum, and anything less will have you rebuilding inside a decade. We put the grades on the quote so you can hold other prices up against it.

We check the consent side at quoting stage. A deck sitting under 1.5 metres above the ground below it generally does not need a building consent, and going higher usually changes that. Getting it wrong is the sort of thing that surfaces years later when you go to sell.

Set Out.

Levels and fall worked out against the house, then footings marked where the load actually lands.

Frame Up.

Treated posts into the ground, then bearers and joists sized for the span.

Lay & Finish.

Boards down at the right spacing with fixings set clean. Offcuts leave with us.

Deck quotes are the hardest thing for a homeowner to compare, because the number on the page tells you almost nothing about what is going under it. A cheap quote usually means lighter timber, shallower footings or wider joist spacing, and you will not find out which until the deck starts moving.

Ours are written so you can see the timber and the substructure spelled out. If another builder has quoted you less, take our sheet and ask them what grade they are using. That question sorts most of it out quickly.
