Fences

Usually something forces the issue. A new dog, a pool going in, or the old fence giving up in a southerly. We build fences across Hamilton and the wider Waikato, from standard paling runs to pool barriers and rural post and rail.

The Awkward Part Is Usually the Conversation Next Door

The building side of a boundary fence is straightforward. What holds most jobs up for months is working out who pays for what. We quote in a way that makes that conversation easier to have, then get on with the part we are actually good at.

Paling Fences.

The standard residential boundary fence, built to 1.8 metres or lower if you would rather keep a view. Rails run true and palings sit square, so it looks deliberate from your neighbour's side as well as yours.

Pool Fencing.

Barriers built to the safety requirements, at least 1.2 metres high with a self closing, self latching gate. This is the one type of fence that always needs a building consent.

Post & Rail.

Common on lifestyle blocks through Cambridge, Tamahere and out toward Te Awamutu. Marks a boundary and holds stock without walling the property off visually. Mesh behind it if you need to contain something smaller.

Gates.

The part of a fence that moves is the part that fails. Braced properly so they do not drop, hung on hardware suited to the weight, with the posts set deeper than the rest of the run.

Process

How We Handle It

Under the Fencing Act, neighbours are generally expected to split the cost of a fence on a shared boundary, as long as what you are building is adequate rather than extravagant. The

process runs on a written notice setting out what is proposed and what it costs, with a window for your neighbour to respond.
Plenty of people find that part more stressful than the build. Our quotes are itemised per metre with the timber and post treatment spelled out, which makes them easy to attach to a fencing notice. Making your neighbour agreeable is beyond us, but at least the paperwork will be clear.

Measure Up.

We walk the line, check levels and ground, and price per metre.

Dig & Set.

Post holes to depth and concreted. Waikato clay takes longer to dig than free draining soil and we allow for it.

Clad & Hang.

Rails, palings and gates fitted. The old fence and every offcut leaves with us.

Almost every fence that goes wrong goes wrong underground, and it is never the palings. Shallow posts lean inside two winters, and there is no fixing that short of pulling the whole run out and starting again. We dig to depth even when the ground is fighting us, which is most of the time around here.

Fences up to 2.5 metres generally sit outside the consent rules, with pool fencing being the exception. We will tell you which side of that line your job falls on at quoting stage.
